Naini Sarbajanin Puja Committee

HISTORY OF NAINI

Naini is a small town situated on the banks of the river Yamuna and is self-contained, limited in size and almost independent of its parent city Prayagraj, better known as Allahabad. Naini has been a testimony for India, to witness the landing of the first Airmail Postal carrier in the year 1911. However, the development of Naini as an industrial hub can be traced back to our Independence and the years immediately thereafter. Naini, initially and solely came into existence for rehabilitation purpose of displaced people. It was established as the production-satellite neighbourhood of Allahabad with the capacity for industrial, commercial and production units to cater largely to the then required industrial development around the country. The industrial colony was set up to bring relief to the uprooted refugees from East and West Pakistan. Naini was the succour to their wounded livelihoods and the thread to rebuild their lives. The location of the township, government support to the venture and finally the grit of the people helped the township stand up to its might in the later years. The aspect of connectivity in terms of rail and road was conducive for industries to flourish, thrive and sustain.

NAINI – THE NEIGHBORHOOD:

With Allahabad gaining national importance all through this period, there was no looking back. The contribution made by the industries situated in Naini for the national exchequer to build the economy coupled with the ruling political brass coming from Allahabad made it immensely noteworthy. Many people started settling in the vicinity owing to the good quality of life and the metropolitan pluralistic culture it promised. Prestigious educational institutions coupled with indigenous minds paved a better way for this satellite neighbourhood of Allahabad.

THE GENESIS OF NAINI SARBAJANIN PUJA COMMITTEE:

By the end of the late 50s (around 1958-59) a few brave and wealthy Bengalis who were already residing in Naini thought of organising a Community Durga Puja. Their dreams fructified in the celebration of the first Durga Puja in Naini at Naini Bazar, where many of these Bengalis then resided. With the establishment of new singularly owned ancillaries to the existing bigger steel, engineering, electrical, sugar, oil, flour mill and glass factories that were dotted across the town, the focus shifted to a larger community. Business was roaringly high and contributions poured in generously from some of these industrial houses as well. NAINI SARBAJANIN PUJA COMMITTEE was thus born. It has been 63 years since then, and there has been no looking back.

A sudden decline during the late 90s in these industries, forced many to move out in search of job opportunities. With Naini attracting many IT companies, it is inching towards becoming a major provider in terms of technology too. Due to the decision made by the Government of India approving the Allahabad-Naini-Bara investment zone backed by the World Bank, hopefully Naini is all set for a growth trajectory.

Naini Sarbajanin Puja Committee still continuing with the tradition of this grand community festival through the progeny of those who conceptualized this originally, trying to preserve similar traditions, ethos and passion to organise such a huge magnum opus year after year in this industrial hub.
